Jorma Paavonen (70) is Professor (Emeritus) of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Helsinki and at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland. This Department is the largest Ob/Gyn Department in Finland, with approximately 15,000 deliveries per year, approximately100 obstetrician-gynecologists in staff, including 33 ob-gyn resident positions. He graduated with his MD degree from the University of Helsinki in 1973 and received his board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1979, and his PhD degree also in 1979 (Chlamydial infections of the female genital tract, University of Helsinki). Dr. Paavonen’s research programs focus on STDs, chlamydial infections and HPV infections in particular, prevention of preterm birth, HPV vaccination, LNG-IUS in the treatment of menorrhagia, vulvar pain syndrome, abnormal placentation, and others. Major activities up to his retirement 2015 included undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and clinical work, both as an obstetrician and as a consultant gynaecologist. Since 1978, Dr. Paavonen has authored more than 500 scientific publications in English, published in peer reviewed journals (H-Index 65). His most recent major publications are on HPV vaccination, Chlamydia-associated infertility, preterm delivery biomarkers, management of postpartum hemorrhage, vestibulectomy in the treatment of vulvar vestibulitis sydrome, cost-effectiveness of LNG-IUS in the treatment of menorrhagia, and disease burden of abnormal placentation. For instance, during the last 4 years (2013-2016) he has authored 64 publications (with an impact factor total 292). He continues to perform as the Principal Investigator of several research programs including HPV vaccination efficacy trials, long term effectiveness of HPV vaccination, amniotic fluid biomarkers in the diagnosis of subclinical chorioamnionitis, disease burden of placental abruption, impact of C .trachomatis in tubal factor infertility and unexplained infertility, and management of vulvar pain syndriome. He has supervised 25 MD PhD programs, and several programs are ongoing. He is or has been the Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of several scientific journals. Dr. Paavonen’s ultimate goal has always been to act as a role model for the next generation as a clinical scientist with high performance teaching, clinical research, and bedside clinical service.
Dr. Paavonen has 8 grandchildren and 2 Shetland sheep dogs which also keep him busy. His other activities include running, golfing, and hunting, just to name a few. He also has a pilot’s license for VFR flying.
