As Mayor of the City of Vienna, I would like to welcome you most warmly to Europe’s leading conference city. Around 400 national and international congresses are held in Vienna every year and more than 240,000 participants can experience the beauty, charm and vitality of the city and its inhabitants during their days in Vienna. As a metropolis in the heart of Europe with a major science and research focus, Vienna not only offers perfect working conditions for scientists, but also fascinates as a cultural capital with its impressive architecture, the many world-class museums and, last but not least, its unrivaled position in the field of classical music. For many of Vienna’s residents, therefore, a good work-life balance has long been a reality.
Vienna also has a particularly long and respected tradition as an important venue for medical conferences in Europe. Since 1873, when the “IIIth International Medical Congress”, which took place in Vienna, helped to develop medicine into a modern scientific discipline, the city has rightly earned a reputation as an international hub for the most up-to-date knowledge in medicine. Vienna also achieved international importance in the field of obstetrics, particularly through the work of the important Hungarian-Austrian physician Ignaz Semmelweis after 1865. Somewhat later, in the years after 1900, the “Viennese School of Obstetrics” founded by Rudolf Chrobak and Friedrich Schauta once again gained worldwide attention because of its pioneering achievements in the field of gynecological operations.
I am therefore extremely pleased that the 31st World Congress on Controversies in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility (COGI) 2023 will again be held in Vienna. Obstetrics, gynecology and infertility concern highly private and often taboo areas of women’s lives. This makes it all the more necessary to exchange current research results and therapeutic options on an international level. I am convinced that the approximately 130 speakers and the more than 1,200 participants from more than 85 countries will discuss innovative findings for the benefit of women and their health and will later successfully apply the “Viennese findings” thus obtained.

Als Bürgermeister der Stadt Wien darf ich Sie sehr herzlich in der führenden europäischen Kongress-Stadt begrüßen. Rund 400 nationale und internationale Kongresse finden jährlich in Wien statt und mehr als 240.000 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer können sich in den Tagen ihres Aufenthaltes in Wien von der Schönheit, dem Charme und der Vitalität der Stadt und seiner Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner überzeugen. Als Metropole im Herzen Europas mit einem großen Wissenschafts- und Forschungsschwerpunkt bietet Wien nicht nur perfekte Arbeitsbedingungen für Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, sondern fasziniert als Weltkulturhauptstadt auch in der Freizeit mit seiner beeindruckenden Architektur, den vielen Museen von Weltrang und nicht zuletzt durch seine unerreichbare Stellung im Bereich der Klassischen Musik. Für viele Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner Wiens ist eine ausgeglichene Work-Life-Balance deshalb schon längst Realität.
Eine besonders lange und anerkannte Tradition besitzt Wien auch als wichtiger Schauplatz für Medizin-Kongresse in Europa. Bereits seit 1873, als der in Wien tagende “III. Internationale Medizinische Kongress” die Medizin zur modernen naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplin entwickelte, besitzt die Stadt zu Recht den Ruf als internationale Drehscheibe aktuellster Wissensvermittlung in der Medizin. Auch im Bereich der Geburtshilfe erreichte Wien besonders durch das Wirken des bedeutenden ungarisch-österreichischen Arztes Ignaz Semmelweis nach 1865 internationale Bedeutung. Etwas später, in den Jahren nach 1900 erlangte die von Rudolf Chrobak und Friedrich Schauta begründete „Wiener Schule der Geburtshilfe“ wegen ihrer Pionierleistungen im Bereich gynäkologischer Operationen noch einmal weltweite Aufmerksamkeit.
Es freut mich daher außerordentlich, dass der 31. World Congress on Controversies in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility (COGI) 2023 wieder in Wien stattfindet. Geburtshilfe, Gynäkologie und Unfruchtbarkeit betreffen höchst private und häufig tabuisierte Lebensbereiche von Frauen. Umso notwendiger ist der Austausch aktueller Forschungsergebnisse und Therapiemöglichkeiten auf internationaler Ebene. Ich bin überzeugt davon, dass die rund 130 Vortragenden und die über 1.200 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer aus mehr als 85 Ländern innovative Erkenntnisse zum Nutzen der Frauen und deren Gesundheit diskutieren und die so gewonnenen „Wiener Erkenntnisse“ später erfolgreich anwenden werden.
