
Dilly Anumba
Dilly Anumba is Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Sheffield and Honorary Consultant Subspecialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is also Honorary Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Cape Town.
He leads specialised Maternal and Fetal Medicine services focused on pregnancy screening, prenatal diagnosis, fetal therapy, and prematurity prevention. His research explores human birth physiology, reproductive immunology, placental dysfunction, preterm birth, and health equity
Professor Anumba has developed innovative technologies for preterm birth screening and management, resulting in granted patents and a spin-out company. He co-leads the UK’s Tommy’s National Centre for Maternity Improvement, advancing decision support tools to reduce variations in care. He is a Key Researcher in the NIHR National Consortium on Maternity Disparities. He was awarded “NIHR Senior Investigator” status in 2025 in recognition of his research leadership.
Professor Anumba has made substantial contributions to global health through leadership, collaboration, and capacity building, working with researchers in South Africa, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Ghana to develop context-driven, scalable interventions to reduce preterm birth and improve adolescent health.
Professor Anumba also contributes to international policy and professional development as a member of the FIGO Preterm Birth Committee, shaping global guidance on prematurity prevention and care.
