Travel and Visa Information
Important Passport & Visa Information for Non-EU Delegates

If you are travelling to the 34th COGI Congress in Athens with a non-EU passport, please take a few minutes to review the important Schengen entry requirements and new European digital border procedures below.
If you have already checked your passport and completed any required visa or travel arrangements, there is no need to take any further action or worry. This information is simply provided to help ensure that all delegates are prepared for their journey.
1. Check Your Passport Validity

Before travelling, please make sure your passport meets the following requirements:
Issued within the last 10 years: Your passport must have been issued within the 10 years preceding your date of entry into the EU.
At least 3 months’ validity remaining: Your passport must remain valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the EU/Schengen Area.
Blank pages: If you require a Schengen visa, your passport should have at least two blank pages available.

2. New EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational as of 10 April 2026. The system electronically records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals travelling to the Schengen Area for short stays and replaces traditional passport stamping with digital records.
When entering the EU/Schengen Area, travellers may be required to:
Provide biometric information, including a facial image and fingerprints.
Complete the registration process electronically, including through self-service kiosks where available.
Have their passport and travel information recorded digitally rather than receiving a traditional passport stamp.
As the system involves additional registration procedures, border processing may take longer, particularly at busy airports. We therefore recommend allowing sufficient time for border control when travelling.

3. Schengen 90/180-Day Rule
For travellers who are permitted to enter the Schengen Area without a visa, short stays are generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period, subject to nationality and individual circumstances.
You can check your permitted stay using the official EU Short-Stay Calculator.
Please note that visa requirements vary according to nationality. If you require a Schengen visa, you should ensure that it has been obtained before travelling.

4. ETIAS – No Action Required at This Time
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is not currently in operation, and no applications are being accepted at this time.
The EU currently expects ETIAS to begin operations in the last quarter of 2026. The European Union will announce the specific launch date in advance.
For the 34th COGI Congress, no ETIAS application is required at this time.
Please rely only on the official EU ETIAS website for future updates and applications.
