Frank Broekmans (1956), MD, PhD, is a Gynaecologist and Emeritus Professor in Reproductive Endocrinology and Surgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht. In the last years of his professional career he has combined his academic career with clinical work in the Centre for Reproductive Medicine at the Dijklander Ziekenhuis in Purmerend, The Netherlands.
He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the VU Medical Center Amsterdam in 1983, became consultant OBGYN in 1990, completed a Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine at the VU Medical Center Amsterdam in 1993, and received his PhD degree in 1995. In October 2010 he was appointed Professor at the University Medical Center in Utrecht.
From October 2023 onwards he has retired as Academic Clinician in Reproductive Medicine, but continued his Consultant role at the Dijklander Hospital. Also, he has joined the Dutch Foundation for Long COVID as Research Manager, with the aim of aligning research and funding in this field in the Netherlands.
He is the PI of many RM studies granted by the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (ZonMW) and the Dutch College for Health Care Insurance. (Insight study, Optimist trial, SCRaTCH IVF, SCRaTCH OFO, LUMO study, Pluim Study, DIVINE Dose predictor), and has founded FrankSchoolRforL, enabling systematic Education for young doctors entering the field of Reproductive Medicine, and providing Consultation activities for RM care centres and Industries in the field of RM.
His scientific career has been highly devoted to the field of female reproductive ageing. Special focus has been on the normal ovarian ageing pattern, assessment of actual and future fertility status, genetic backgrounds of the variation in the ovarian ageing process, and the link between vascular and ovarian ageing. Recent focus has moved towards the role of the endometrium in reproductive success. The banking of endometrium tissue from several patient groups has allowed to develop a research line where endometrium organoids are utilised to unravel many functional aspects that could lead to understanding and prevention of several reproductive failure conditions. He has produced with his team 320 peer-reviewed scientific papers, contributed 38 book chapters and presented over 200 invited lectures at international meetings.
