Farners Amargant i Riera , BS, MS, PhD
Dr. Amargant i Riera completed her B.S. in Biochemistry at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She then received a “La Caixa” fellowship to complete a Master’s in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biomedicine at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2014, she obtained an industrial PhD scholarship and returned to Barcelona to perform her doctorate under the supervision of Dr. Rita Vassena (Clínica Eugin) and Dr. Isabelle Vernos (Center for Genomic Regulation). Her PhD research focused on developing new tools to improve gamete selection during in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. In November 2018, Farners joined Francesca Duncan’s Lab (Northwestern University, Chicago, USA) as a post-doctoral fellow. In the Duncan lab, Farners’ research focused on understanding the mechanisms of ovarian aging. In October 2023, Farners opened her laboratory at the Department of Ob/Gyn at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (USA), where she investigates the molecular and mechanical control of folliculogenesis and oocyte quality, and how factors such as aging, PCOS, and diabetes impact these processes. During her career, Farners has received multiple awards and grants such as a postdoctoral grant from the Global Consortium of Reproductive Longevity and Equality, the K99/R00 postdoc to professor transition grant, the “Anita Payne – Society for the Study of Reproduction” award, and the Northwestern award for excellence in women’s health research, among others. Outside the lab, Dr. Amargant i Riera is committed to promoting women in science and is an advisor for the Chicago Women in STEM initiative, an organization she served as president from 2020-2022.
