
Nikolaos Thomakos , MD, PhD, received his medical degree from the University of Athens and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and later a subspecialty fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “Alexandra” Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a European Board and College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (EBCOG) and an Accredited European Training Center in Gynaecological Oncology.
Dr. Thomakos is an accredited Gyn Oncologist by the European Society of Gyn Oncology (ESGO), since November 2013.
Previous experience and scientific background consists of a postdoctoral Clinical and Research Fellowship program at Baylor College of Medicine and at MD Anderson Cancer Center (Division of Gynecological Oncology and Gyn/Oncology-Immunology), Houston, Texas. Also, worked as senior SpR at the Northern Gynecological Oncology Center, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, U.K.
Dr. Thomakos has presented his work at numerous national and international meetings and published original research, reviews and case reports in peer reviewed journals.
He is a member of the European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO) since 2003, and served for the Local Organizing Committees at the 21st International Meeting of ESGO in Athens, Greece, November 2019 and at the ESGO-ENYGO Masterclass in Gynaecological Oncology in Athens, June 2023.
Also member of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) since 2000 and of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) since 2010, volunteered on SGO International Committee (2013-2015).
His current position is Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Gynecological Oncology at the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “Alexandra” Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, while was on the faculty at the same department since 2006.
Dr. Thomakos’ research interest includes Fertility Preserving Surgery for young women with gynaecological cancer. He has a special clinical focus in perioperative care and postoperative management of Gyn/Oncology surgical patients and currently organizes the Enhanced Recovery Protocols of the Unit of Gynecologic Oncology with the aim of optimizing patient care. He has instituted several clinical and research protocols aiming to evaluate the impact of immunonutrition in frail patients as well as rapid mobilization of patients undergoing high complexity score operations for advanced gynecological malignancies.
He is an invited Reviewer and member of Editorial Board in many medical journals.
Recently Dr. Thomakos was elected as Acting Member of ESGO Council for the next 4 years (2024-2028) and he is active in ESGO Prevention Committee, Guidelines Committee and the Joint ESGO-IGCS Publication Committee.
