Shari Mackens graduated as a medical doctor from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium, in 2012. Immediately afterwards, she started working at the Centre for Reproductive Medicine at the University Hospital Brussels, Belgium, as a PhD student and as a specialist in training in obstetrics and gynecology. From 2012 until 2017, she performed basic science research on endometrial receptivity and human embryo implantation. Her research was presented in her PhD thesis entitled ‘Hypes and hopes for endometrial receptivity in ART’ (2020). At present, she is a medical director in Brussels IVF at the University Hospital Brussels and a clinical professor at the VUB with a specific interest in translational research focusing on the role of the endometrium in ART (research group Genetics, Reproduction and Development – GRAD). As of October 2022, she is section editor for Reproductive Biomedicine Online. In 2024, she was elected as member of the Young Academy, the youth academy of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB). She has authored more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals and lectures frequently at national and international meetings.
